Looking for an integrated system which captures images every few seconds, analyses the data, and reports results from a an area of about 4 square inches. The desire is to see changes over time (about a minute or two). The object of the study is to characterize foam formation and release. The size of the phenomenon to be studied is is 0.5 to 2.0mm.

Clemex Vision Lite And PE allows the user to program a time lapse into its acquisition program in order to facilitate applications such as the one describe above. We could capture and analyze the data simultaneously if needed.
In fact one should first calculate the resolution of the video system that will be used to see if the measurements accuracy will be met.
Normally, the minimum size of objects that should be measured by an image analysis system should be kept at around 5-10 pixels in length (longest dimension of an object) or diameter the objects are mostly circular. This size in pixels allows for enough shape information and also allows minor artifacts to be removed without affecting measurements of the real objects.
Thus, in this case, assuming a minimum size of 7 pixels nominal, then the system resolution with a standard high res camera of 1280x1024 pixels would be 100,000 microns (100 mm or 4") / 1280 pixels = 78.125 micron/pixels. For a 7 pixels object, the minimum diameter that could be measured is 546 mic, or 0.546 mm and therefore meet the requirements. If more precision is required, a higher resolution camera can be used, either a 1600x1200 pixels or even a 2000x1500 pixels.
Clemex Vision PE can make objects measurements in relation to time. Output then shows graphs of a particular measurement versus time.
